There aren’t many places in the world where you can catch a “Super Slam” – a blue, black, and striped marlin and sailfish in one day, and even fewer where it is possible on fly.
In February and early March, the waters off Lamu Island on Kenya’s North Shore, catching a super-slam on fly is a reality, and if that wasn’t enough, wahoo on fly are possibilities too.
If sailfish are more your size, in mid-October through mid-November, hundreds of sailfish migrate down the waters off Lamu Island.
The East African and Somali currents combine with silt from the river deltas, creating nutrient-rich waters that hold a ton of baitfish, and it’s this that the sailfish come hunting for.
Some days, you can see 100 sailfish finning as they feed and corral bait on the surface. This is the perfect time to fish for them with a fly.
